West 5th Street Road Overpass to Reopen

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet has announced a plan to reopen the West 5th Street Road overpass.

A full closure was put in place on April 28, when the overpass was struck by a vehicle on U.S. 60.

Crews are installing temporary signals at each end of the overpass, which will allow traffic to cross the structure in one lane, one direction at a time.

Next week, KYTC will widen the approaches and re-stripe the road for two-way traffic.  Both of those lanes will be narrower than normal due to damage to the substructure.

Drivers should stay within the marked lanes on West 5th Street Road.

After reevaluating the condition of the overpass, KYTC determined these steps would make it possible to keep traffic safely moving by shifting it away from the damaged area of the structure until full repairs can be made.

Two support beams were damaged in the strike.  While the overpass is structurally safe, these beams will need to be replaced and must be special ordered from a supplier, which could lengthen the amount of time needed to complete repairs.
