Daviess County Fiscal Court has recognized volunteer firefighters with 50 or more years of service to the community.
“It’s an honor to speak to these gentlemen and their families,” said Fire Chief Jeremy Smith. “Most, I have known my entire career in the fire service.”
“I understand what they go through each day, walking away from a meal, their family, a kids’ ballgame, they sacrifice everything because someone had a bad day.”
Smith recalled the early days of the fire service in Daviess County, when seven new stations were built and departments were busy acquiring equipment, including engines and tankers for firefighting.
“These gentlemen helped to bring our fire service to what it is today,” Smith explained. “We have one of the best systems in the state of Kentucky. We have developed a good ISO rating due to all of their hard work. And they have made an impact on my life and the hundreds of volunteers they have trained.”
Smith said all of these men have served at least 50 years in the volunteer system.
