Daviess County Solid Waste has announced an operational change related to the March 15th hail storm.
Effective immediately, the Grimes Avenue Transfer Station will begin accepting asphalt shingles and their roof components – the sheathing and underlayment.
“We want to try and do what we can to help out the citizens of our community and start taking some of those roofing components again,” said Solid Waste Manager Travis Ricker.
“The issue with the Construction & Demolition Debris (CD&D) is still an issue,” Ricker added. “It’s capacity here. The roofing components, especially the asphalt shingles, they are a very dense material. So we are looking at how we can change operationally. We are looking at what we can add and what we can do. We think with the capacities, and the dense nature of the shingles, we can take those over here as a good faith effort to help out the community.”
The Grimes Avenue Transfer Station cannot accept other CD&D material from the storm, such as siding and gutter components. Those items should be taken to the Daviess County Landfill.
“We are not ready to go live with 100 percent of CD&D at the Transfer Station,” said Judge/Executive Charlie Castlen. “But we still have that working. We don’t have a definite date. But we are trying to help our neighbors impacted by the hail storm.”
Daviess County Emergency Management Agency received reports of tennis ball size hail early Saturday in St. Joseph, Owensboro and points in between.

The Transfer Station is located at 2129 Grimes Avenue in Owensboro. Hours are Monday – Friday from 6 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Saturday from 7 a.m. to Noon.
