Renewal of a Kentucky Registration

Options for Renewing your Vehicle Registrations:


  1. Renew online using the State’s Web Renewal System:  MVL.ky.gov
  2. Use the NEW 24 hour automated phone renewal service by calling- 1-877-885-3013 (You will need your vehicles title number, renewal notice amount, and credit card to process your renewal over the phone; your title number is located on your title or your old registration.)
  3. Mail-in your renewal by following the instructions on your renewal card
  4. Phone-in your renewal during business hours by calling 270-685-8434 Ext. #2 (please have your license plate and credit card available)
  5. Come into the office between 8:00AM and 4:30PM

*There are convenience fees charged for using credit cards by our vendor.  The Daviess County Clerk’s Office doesn’t set nor receive any of these fees. 

What you’ll need

  1. Proof of current Kentucky liability insurance
  2. Social Security Number for all owners on the registration or Federal Tax ID Number for companies
  3. Add $2.00 postage and handling per registration for mail in renewal.

Any delinquent property tax owed may prohibit registration renewal.

Vehicle registrations are renewed yearly. Vehicles generally expire in the owner’s birth month with the following execptions:

  • Commercial Vehicles 14,000 lbs and greater –  expire in March
  • Trailers – expire in March
  • Boat trailers – expire in April
  • Motor Homes – expire in March
  • Disabled plates – expire in July
  • Special Plates – vary
  • Boats – expire in April

The Department of Revenue mails a courtesy notice in the month prior to expiration showing tax and registration fees due.

Property Tax

Property tax for your vehicles, trailers and boats are assessed by the Property Valuation Administrator on January 1st of each year. You are responsible for property tax for any vehicle registered to you on January 1.

Taxes are collected upon renewal or registration change. If a vehicle is transferred prior to renewal, the January 1st owner is responsible for the taxes on that vehicle.
