Proclamation for Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph

The Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph are celebrating 150 years since their arrival at Maple Mount on August 15, 1874.

Since that time, they’ve brought education to thousands of children throughout Daviess County, opening schools at St. Alphonsus in St. Joseph, St. Elizabeth in Curdsville, St. Peter in Stanley, St. William and Mary Carrico in Knottsville, St. Anthony in Browns Valley, St. Martin in Rome, St. Lawrence in St. Lawrence, St. Mary Magdalene in Sorgho, Mount Saint Joseph Academy in Maple Mount, and at the Owensboro parishes of St. Joseph and Paul, Blessed Mother, Immaculate, St. Pius, and Precious Blood.

The Ursuline Sisters brought higher education opportunities to women by opening the Mount Saint Joseph Junior College for Women in 1925.  They also provided the first four-year college in the county by opening Brescia College in 1950.

The Ursuline Sisters have expanded their ministries to serve in numerous churches in Daviess County, Centro Latino, and the Mount Saint Joseph Conference and Retreat Center.

Therefore, in recognition, Judge/Executive Charlie Castlen has proclaimed August 15, 2024 as Ursuline Sisters of Mount Saint Joseph Day.
