Thousands of acres of corn and soybeans were planted in late March, resulting in an unusually early harvest for some farmers.
Extension Agent Clint Hardy provides an update from Maceo, where the combines are rolling off New Cut Road. With little rainfall the last month, farmers are saving on drying cost, which is helpful considering prices are at 15-year lows.
Hardy expects a wide yield range for corn and soybeans, depending on the planting date. Crops that were put in the ground late would greatly benefit from another rain.
Cattle pastures are also dry. Hardy fears that some farmers may need to haul water for those animals, as ponds are becoming depleted.
Hardy says the final overall yield for Daviess County will be average at best.
