The Daviess County Fire Department is providing guidance on the use of portable generators.
Use portable generators outdoors in well-ventilated areas away from all doors, windows and vents. NEVER operate a portable generator inside a home, garage, basement, crawlspace, shed or other enclosed space.
Regularly check and maintain your portable generator to ensure it will work properly when needed. If you see electrical crews in your neighborhood during a power outage, let them know you are using a generator in case of backfeeding.
Ensure the generator is dry. Connect appliances to the generator with heavy-duty extension cords. Make sure you have carbon monoxide alarms in your home.
