Daviess County Landfill Cooking Compost for Spring Release

As spring weather arrives, the Daviess County Landfill is starting the process of making the first batch of compost for the year.

Leaves collected in the City of Owensboro are placed in rows. The Landfill adds biosolids to start “cooking” the compost.

The biosolids have microorganisms that break down the material and release heat. The compost must reach 130 degrees for a two week period before it can be screened for use.

Solid Waste Manager Travis Ricker describes the process with Commissioner Chris Castlen, the liaison for the department.

As long as the weather and temperature remain agreeable, the Landfill will have compost available for sale next month. Watch our social media pages for updates.
