At the Daviess County Landfill, construction is underway on a facility that will convert the Landfill gas (LFG) into a commercial grade product of pipeline quality.
LFG is a mixture of methane, carbon dioxide, and other compounds that forms during trash decomposition. The Landfill must collect the LFG in underground wells and either flare it or convert the gas into energy.
Solid Waste Manager Travis Ricker estimates the infrastructure for the energy project will be finished by mid-December. It will likely be operational by the first or second quarter of next year.
While the County is providing the use of the landfill gas, the plant and pipeline will be managed privately.
