Christmas for the Fishes Providing New Habitat at Lake Malone

Hundreds of live Christmas trees are now submerged at the bottom of Lake Malone.

The “Christmas for the Fishes” program is designed to introduce new fish habitat with evergreens donated after the holidays.

“Natural Christmas trees donated through the program are bundled and dropped in the lake to provide aquatic cover that fish need to survive and thrive,” said Spencer Phillips, Fish Habitat Biologist.

About 250 of the 350 trees came from the Grimes Avenue Transfer Station in Owensboro.

Phillips says the program was extremely successful with individual donations and a large drop-off of trees by the City of Owensboro.

The fish attractor sites may be viewed at https://fw.ky.gov/Fish/Pages/fish_attractor_lakes.aspx.  Just look for the Christmas tree icons on the Google map for Lake Malone.
