Caisson Wells Added to Capture More Landfill Gas

When garbage breaks down in the landfill, it produces a mixture of gases, primarily methane and carbon dioxide. This Landfill gas (LFG) must be captured and burned off through a flare system or used for energy.

Currently, the Daviess County Landfill is producing approximately 600 cubic feet per minute of LFG.

Site Supervisor Bob Root says new caisson wells have been installed to capture more gas. Over time, these wells can be extended or raised with the landfill surface.

Construction is underway on a facility that will convert the Landfill gas into a commercial grade product of pipeline quality. The project will likely be operational by early next year.
