Visit Owensboro has announced a public-private partnership between the Daviess County Fiscal Court, the City of Owensboro, and Owensboro Health.
The project includes a modular, portable sports floor and equipment that will allow the community to attract multiple indoor sporting events, including volleyball, basketball and pickleball.
“With our existing premier outdoor sports facilities and now with the ability to offer a premier indoor sports experience, Owensboro and Daviess County will become the complete sports solution at the Owensboro Convention Center,” said Mark Calitri, Visit Owensboro President & CEO.
“This investment will allow Owensboro to enter the exploding sports tourism arena, with spending projected of nearly $20 billion next year,” said Norm Gill, Managing Partner of Pinnacle Indoor Sports.
“The ability to host large regional indoor tournaments and events will draw thousands of visitors to the community and have a significant economic impact,” Gill added.
In the next few weeks, Visit Owensboro will move through the process of formalizing the project.
“Moving forward in our COVID recovery efforts, Visit Owensboro is committed to not just returning to where we were before the pandemic, but to raising the bar and improving our position in the tourism marketplace,” said Brian Smith, Board Chair.
“This addition, when completed, will provide an opportunity for this community to capture the fourth sports season (winter), which has been a tourism goal for many years,” Smith concluded. “We want to thank all of the members of our team; the convention center staff, as well as our tourism partners in this endeavor.”
